(Day 12) Kingtones Memoirs
February 17, 1964 (Monday)
We got up at 12:00 noon. Mike and I went shopping downtown. I didn’t make breakfast so we stopped at Burger King and got something to eat. Burger King was new to us, we didn’t have any in Michigan. Bob and Phil went out and tried to get auditions for the band. They hoped that maybe they could get The Kingtones into a small club for a day or two. We needed the money. They were successful in getting two clubs to say that we could audition for them.
We decided to wash the van so that it would “shine” when we drove up for our auditions. We wanted to make a good first impression. I don’t know if we used too much water, or what, but our land lord came over and gave us heck for almost caving in the septic tank.
Since it was such a beautiful day, I decided to go back to Fort Lauderdale. I wanted to go get a picture painted of me to send to Chick. Mike and I had seen a place that painted portraits when we were there earlier. Sorry to say, I wasted my money. The portrait was not very good. It could have been used by Pete, Bob, Mike or Phil as their portrait, and no one would have known the difference.
We ran out of peanut butter so Mike went and bought some. He came back with a brand that we had never heard of. He was trying to save us money. We didn’t notice any difference at first but soon after eating it, everyone had the runs.
Pete, Phil and I were still in good health but Bob had a cold. We were not sure what was wrong with Mike, but he had a runny nose, dry cough and a high temperature. He was very sick. There was still a lot of tension in the air. We had not rented a television as of yet. Hopefully, we could do that tomorrow.
