(Day 2) Kingtones Memoirs
February 7, 1964 (Friday)
With the rising of the sun and the fresh smell of oranges in the air, our spirits once again became very excited, especially when we saw the sign: Welcome to Florida – the Sunshine State. Wow! It was about 10:30 am and just a beautiful day. All the car windows were down and Bob and Phil put their car tops down. It was nice and warm outside with not a cloud in the sky.
We stopped for breakfast. This time the food was delicious. Everything seemed better. We were laughing, joking and getting along quite well. We even ignored Mike when he gave us his stupid grin, like the cat that ate the canary. He also started beating on his chest like “King Kong,” because he had been driving Phil’s T-Bird.
After breakfast we started for Orlando. We arrived there around 5:30 pm. We were Exhausted! Tired! Beat! Pooped! You name it and we were it!
We decided to get a motel and crash for the night. We stopped at 3 different motels. The first one looked like a dump. We didn’t really care as long as it was cheap. They wanted $15.00 for the room! We couldn’t believe how expensive this “dump” was. We left and found another motel. This looked a little better then the first one, but since they wanted $14.00 for the night, and we didn’t have much money, we decided to try one more place. On our third attempt, we “struck gold.” We almost didn’t stop because it was a much nicer place than its predecessors and we figured it would cost a fortune. But since we were so tired, we thought we’d give it a try. They were asking $12.00 for the night! Hallelujah! Our prayers had been answered! We certainly didn’t understand why the room was so cheap, but we didn’t care.
After getting into the room, we realized we were right next to a very busy highway. We could hear everything. If we weren’t so tired, we probably would have been awake all night. But as tired as we were we closed our eyes and didn’t move until morning.
