Flintstones

Grand Rapids – (Later changed the name to the Avengers)

Band Members:

  • Gene Anderson (Lead guitar)
  • Paul Schaub (Rhythm guitar)
  • Rick Dodge (Drums)

The Flintstones name was thought of by a high school friend with an artistic talent and drew a picture of Fred Flintstone beating Barney Ruble over the head with a club. Unique. We played strictly instrumentals. I was lead guitar and we played a lot of the Ventures and Duane Eddy. Rick Dodge the first Drummer left for the marines and me and Paul were still 16. We got Rick Priest on drums and at one time had a keyboard. Paul left to build race cars,,,Rick Joined the Navy, I got drafted went to Vietnam was wounded. I tried to start another band with Dave Vanderhooning and some guys but didn’t work out. Gave up playing. 40 years later 2011 bought a Fender Strat I mess around with. I see Bob Reilly every year now and would love to jam with him sometime. Bob and I learned to play the guitar together when we were about 13. Bobby is an awesome Bass player. I wish there were some old pics around of the Flintstones or Avengers from the day. Gene (Geno) Anderson

Hello, My name is Rick Dodge . I played drums with Tommy Carter and the Ramrods in 1962 . We recorded a record ; Side A Flying Saucer Twist, Side B Twisting Boogie . After that Gene Anderson, lead guitar and Paul Schaub on rhthym guitar and I on drums started another band named the Flinstones . Later we changed the name to the Avengers . We played in 1962 ans 1963 mostly at WLAV and WGRD dances. DJ’s Skip Bell or Bill Merchant would call us to be their live entertainment at local dances . We played in the ” Battle of the Bands ” at the Civic Auditorium ( I think we took 1st place ) , the old Armory , Grand Haven ” Beech Bashes “, and all the Catholic Schools dances that they DJ ed . Thank You for your interest . Rick
