Riverun (Lead guitar, vocals) (RIP)
Jack Wolotira, lead guitar for Riverun, was musically the leader of the band although he was only sixteen when the group was formed.
Best known for his guitar solo on the Grateful Dead’s “St. Stephen”, he was “the most creative guitar player I have ever had the honor to play with,” according to Mike Green. Jack (also known as Jon) left the group in Fall 1971 to study music composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He was replaced in the group by Dan’s brother, Fred LeBaron. Unfortunately, in 1972, Jack became ill—eventually diagnosed as brain cancer–and was forced to leave both Berklee, and ultimately the band. Although surgery & chemotherapy saved his life, he suffered a stroke during the operation that impacted his ability to play the guitar and effectively ended his career as a professional musician. He spent the rest of his life in Kodiak, AK, New York, NY; Mesa, AZ; and Seattle, WA where he died in 1999 at the age of 46.
