(Day 36) Kingtones Memoirs

March 12, 1964 (Thursday)

We got up at 2:30 pm. It was another very hot day, until a ten minute downpour cooled things down a little. Everybody except Pete was moaning and groaning about their sunburn. We took turns spraying each other’s back with MediQuick. I don’t think it worked very well. The boys helped me clean up the apartment a little bit, after I bitched at them and we took the Kingtones’ van back to the Ford Dealership to get the starter fixed.

On the way back to our apartment, I made the boys stop at the store for some groceries. They were not happy about it, but I told them if we didn’t stop, I wasn’t making supper. When we got back, I made them a nice dinner: round steak, corn, tossed salad, mashed potatoes and Kool-Aid.

At 8:15 pm, we left for Porky’s. The Thunderbirds went on stage first that night. We noticed when they started playing, that they didn’t sound very good. We then realized that their usual bass player, who we considered the backbone of the band, was missing; he was sick. They had a fill in bass player: probably one of those musicians sitting in the Union Hall waiting to be called, but he wasn’t nearly as good.  This actually helped us; because The Thunderbirds didn’t sound very good, it made our music sound even better. Our “rock momentum” was picking up steam and by the last two sets, the “Kingtones’ Sound” was back. The audience stayed to the end and yelled for encores.

When we finished playing, we found out that Porky hadn’t even been there to see how well we had done. On our way back to the apartment, Pete started yelling about not getting paid enough. We all felt the same way, but we didn’t know exactly what to do about it. We were all healthy and getting along just okay. I missed Chick very much.
