One Response to Popeye

  1. Ron Sax says:

In 1956 or ’57 I saw Popeye Booker at a small bar in Grand Rapids. I and some fellow ex-GI students at Central Michigan drove to GR on a tip from a music teacher friend. Popeye was quite elderly, had recently lost his wife. The bar was empty except for us students. Popeye played beautifully, solo, in his Tatumesque style; it was magic. He asked Jay Dana, a good bass player, to sit in; Jay was thrilled. It was an unforgettable evening. I remember a joke: “Know why I took up the piano?” asked Popeye. “Because my beer glass kept falling off my violin.”
